Conserving water

Our focus has been on investments into our stormwater system to build resilience and adapt to the impacts of climate change, however, we also acknowledge that potable water is becoming an increasingly precious resource.

In 2021 we set a target to achieve a 20% reduction in potable water use from 2019 levels by 2030. We have seen a significant increase in potable water use in 2024 due to the growth of passenger numbers and significant construction works on precinct as part of our development plan.

While total water demand at the airport is inevitable as passenger numbers continue to increase, we acknowledge that we need to explore water saving opportunities across the precinct to minimise and reuse water where possible.

Auckland Airport’s significant reductions in potable water use between FY20 – 22 were largely due to the much lower passenger numbers as a result of COVID-19 restrictions in these years.

Water efficiency in our terminals

We are continuing to implement a rolling programme to upgrade fixtures and fittings that support water efficiency in-use, and prevent leaks.

All upgrades include a third pipe to allow the use of recycled water when it becomes available across the precinct.
