AKL Master Plan 2025

Auckland Airport is a vital enabler of Aotearoa New Zealand’s economic and social potential. As the nation’s primary border, Auckland Airport is the place of arrival or departure for 90 per cent of overseas visitors and voyaging New Zealanders.

Almost all visitors to New Zealand come by air. In the past year Auckland Airport has connected 18.5 million travellers to more than 60 destinations in New Zealand and internationally, managed more than 150,000 aircraft movements, and moved over $26 billion in freight. It’s also where more than 20,000 people work on a 1500ha precinct that is the base for a multitude of aeronautical, logistics, commercial, retail and hospitality companies, supporting $35.1 billion in national economic output.

With traveller and aircraft movements forecast to double over the next two decades, our 2025 Master Plan considers not only our core operations – the airfield including the potential northern runway, terminals and other aeronautical assets – but how we respond to climate change and environmental management and sustainability, digital technology and innovation, energy transition and future fuel and transport connections. It also considers how Auckland Airport continues to support the economic ambitions and community wellbeing of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and wider Aotearoa New Zealand as air connectivity grows.

The 2025 Master Plan provides a 25-year vision of integrated land use and infrastructure to meet the evolving requirements of our aviation customers and partners, and the needs of travellers, the community, and the nation. The plan is our guideline for how we will manage journeys for decades to come, ensuring we build what is needed, in the right place, and at the right time.

It differs from Auckland Airport’s Capital Plan which focuses on the specific projects we intend to deliver over a 10-year time frame, including details such as financial planning, project prioritisation and resource allocation, and is subject to formal consultation with our Substantial Customer airlines.

The Master Plan produced in 2014 has directly informed the present transformation of Auckland Airport across 400,000sqm of airfield infrastructure, transportation, and terminals, the biggest upgrade since the airport opened 60 years ago. This represents a dynamic period for Auckland Airport as we transform the airport service experience, build capacity and resilience, and create enduring value for New Zealand.

The Master Plan is a draft. As we prepare our airport for generations to come it is important we receive feedback about these plans from our stakeholders and wider community. Please follow this link to share your responses about Auckland Airport’s master plan.
