Plugging up leaky pipes

28 April 2011

Auckland Airport has been plugging up its leaky pipes as part of an effort to improve efficiency and reduce water waste across the business.

An extensive audit of the entire water system identified a significant leak airside in the runway area late last year.

Fiona Wright, commercial manager for the domestic terminal and utilities, says it was leaking nearly 93,000 cubic metres of water per year – equivalent to the water consumption of 435 households.

The repair job is now saving the airport a whopping $243,000 per year in water costs as well as being friendlier to the environment.

Fiona says the improvements have seen the airport reduce its water allocation and reduce losses to below 12%.
