2033 – 2038 possible key developments
Regional terminal
In the future, a dedicated regional terminal building and pier may be required to support regional operations. Any future regional terminal would be designed to accommodate any regulatory changes, such as a requirement for security screening, and piers able to provide the required stand capacity.
International expansion
As international demand grows, additional processing and dwell space may be needed to accommodate international travellers. The expansion will ensure sufficient space for the baggage system, passenger dwell areas, and border agencies’ requirements.
Eastern Ring road and relocation of Park ‘n’ Ride north – only triggered by decision to progress second runway
The development of the northern runway necessitates a revised plan for the Eastern Ring Road. This road will remain the primary northern access point to the precinct, aligning with the northern runway platform while ensuring a design that can accommodate the projected traffic demand.
Northern runway
Towards the end of this stage, a new northern runway will run parallel to the existing runway O5R/23L. Originally consented in 2003, the 2,983 metre northern runway will be built on airport-owned land and without the need for any reclamation of the Manukau Harbour.
Mass transit & road improvements from the south-east
Auckland Airport anticipates that mass transit (including the second stage of Transport Hub) will be provided from the south-east, connecting the Airport with Puhinui, Manukau and Botany. Coupled with this are major road, pedestrian and cycle improvements on Tom Pearce Drive and Puhinui Road to secure the long term resilience and reliability of access to the Airport along this critical route.
JUHI relocation
JUHI (Joint User Hydrant Installation) is the fuel terminal at the airport that distributes jet fuel to domestic and international aircraft stands. The present JUHI location in the central airport precinct is slated for relocation due to land use changes associated with the expansion of regional airline services, and the need to expand the facility to accommodate increasing demand for jet fuel.
New western non-contact stands
Capacity of international stands will be enhanced through the development of western non-contact stands.
