Ground transport

Our approach

Auckland Airport is committed to reducing traffic congestion and identifying more sustainable transport options. This includes finding ways to minimise the impact of our 14.5 million passengers and the 12,000 people employed at the airport.

Since 2006 we have been operating a travel plan which aims to encourage those working at the airport to use sustainable transport options when travelling to and from work.

Our 30-year vision includes a wide range of transport modes to provide Aucklanders and visitors with greater choice and flexibility. We have set aside enough land for both rail to the airport and an underground station at our new combined domestic and international terminal. We are also proposing better parking facilities, improved pedestrian and cycle access, and a better roading network in and around the airport.

We work closely with Auckland Council and the Government to ensure that Auckland’s transport infrastructure is developed ‘in sync’ with the expansion we are expecting at the airport over the next 30 years.

Carpooling

We recognise that single occupancy vehicles increase congestion, which in turn increases journey times for everyone and has negative environmental impacts in terms of air quality. Auckland Airport has been promoting carpooling for airport staff since 2006 and is part of the national “Let’s Carpool” network. Staff car parks include priority parking for vehicles with more than two occupants. These priority parks are closer to places of work and/or car park exits.

Anyone interested in carpooling can register on the Let’s Carpool website and search for people in their neighbourhood who also work at the airport. You can offer to be a driver or request to be a passenger. For more information visit the Let’s Carpool website.

Public transport

We encourage local workers to use the public transport services provided around the airport. Airport workers can get a subsidised fare on the SkyBus, a fast and convenient 24/7 service to and from the city centre.

The 380 Airporter bus service runs from Onehunga to Manukau, seven days a week, from early until late. This service links to rail and bus services at Onehunga, providing connections to West Auckland. It also links to rail and bus services at Papatoetoe and Manukau and to additional cross town bus services from Mangere Town Centre.

Bus and train timetables and information can be found on the Auckland Transport website.

Cycling

We also encourage cycling and provide bike racks at both the international and domestic terminals and within the airport office precinct. Cycle routes are constantly being reviewed to improve connectivity. As the airport develops, additional cycle and shared paths will be provided for those that work in and around the airport.

Staff shuttles from park and ride

Park and ride facilities are provided for staff, with frequent shuttles to the places of work. Carpooling priority parks are also provided at our park and ride facilities and our shuttle buses comply with the latest ‘Euro V’ engine specifications to minimise environmental impacts.
