Regional airfield expansion
Regional airfield upgrade to boost connectivity
A $147 million investment in AKL’s domestic airfield to create four new aircraft stands aims to boost capacity for regional travel. The new aircraft stands and 8,500m² of additional airfield space is designed to accommodate both turboprop and jet aircraft. Once complete in 2028, the project could enable nearly 100,000 additional seats annually on regional routes.
With around 140 regional flights operating daily and 40% of all regional journeys starting or ending in Auckland, the development is a key step in strengthening the country’s air network. It also supports the wider economic role of air travel, connecting regional businesses and communities to each other and to the world – from friends, whānau and visitors to business relationships and New Zealand products and produce.
The upgrade includes improvements to stormwater infrastructure and lays the groundwork for future airfield and terminal developments, ensuring resilience and flexibility for decades to come.
While regional flights will continue during construction, parking changes will be in place from mid-2025.
