New family friendly mountain bike park to open at Auckland Airport

23 November 2013

This Saturday, 23 November, will be an exciting day for cycle-loving Aucklanders, as Auckland Airport officially opens its new mountain bike park.

Designed by Auckland Mountain Bike Club, the Runway Mountain Bike Park is situated behind the Airport Shopping Centre within The District, at the end of Ansett Place. The new trails are perfect for the whole family and have been designed for all levels of experience.

“We were very excited to be asked by Auckland Airport to work with them on this fantastic initiative,” says David Gabbitas, Auckland Mountain Bike Club.

We focused on providing trails that all ages and skill levels can enjoy, while still providing fun for experienced riders.”

“The Runway Mountain Bike Park is a great place for an introduction to off-road cycling and the variety of features will help riders develop their skills.”

The 5km track features a network of different tracks, including a 50m pump track with a circuit of dirt rollers and berms that can be ridden without pedalling. The Runway Mountain Bike Park is located on former farmland and provides views of the airport and the historic Abbeville Estate.

To celebrate the opening of the park, bicycle hire company Natural High will be offering mountain bikes to hire for a gold coin donation from 10am on 23 November. Auckland Mountain Bike Club will also be on hand to provide riding tips, as well as a sausage sizzle.

The Runway Mountain Bike Park is part of a programme to transform the Airport and provide a better experience for visitors, Aucklanders, airport employees and the local community.

The District at Auckland Airport also includes the newly opened Outdoor Gallery; an open air art gallery featuring works from 11 of New Zealand’s best artists. For further details on the Outdoor Gallery and Auckland Airport’s other current and upcoming initiatives, visit www.venturehere.co.nz.
